When does my car need an MOT?

New cars need their first MOT when they turn three years old. After that, you'll need one every year. You can check your MOT due date and history on the government website using your registration number.

Can I drive my car to you if it doesn't have a valid MOT?

Yes — you can drive to a pre-booked MOT test even if your MOT has expired, as long as your vehicle is roadworthy. However, driving without a valid MOT at any other time is illegal and could invalidate your insurance. Please book in advance so we have your appointment confirmed.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

We'll give you a clear failure report detailing exactly what needs to be fixed. If we carry out the necessary repairs, you may be eligible for a free partial retest within the qualifying period. You're under no obligation to have the repairs done with us — but we're always happy to give you a no-obligation quote.

What's the difference between a failure and an advisory?

A failure item means your vehicle doesn't meet the legal safety standard and cannot be certified as roadworthy. An advisory is something that's currently fine but worth keeping an eye on — it won't fail your vehicle now but may do so in future if left unattended. We'll explain all items clearly in plain language.

How long does an MOT take?

Most MOT tests take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. If there are items that need attention the inspection may take a little longer to document thoroughly. We'll always keep you informed of timings when you arrive.
